The Little Red Lighthouse (Jeffreys Hook Lighthouse) is located under the George Washington Bridge in our neighborhood. Have you heard of the book “The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge“? It was written in 1942 by Hildegarde H. Swift and Lynd Ward and talks about how even the little lighthouse is just as important as the huge bridge that towers over it. The lighthouse was set for destruction in 1951, but the public protested and it was preserved. We went on one of the tours a couple of weekends ago:

George Washington Bridge (GWB)
Isn’t it the cutest little thing?
You can see the size of the lighthouse compared to the people. Not very big. The only way up is a single person spiral staircase:
Once you get to the top, you have to crawl through this teeny tiny door:
The view from the top is beautiful, though, and worth the trip:

We stayed for a little while and then headed back down the stairs:
Yay Little Red Lighthouse!
