Yep. I sure was. I’m pretty sure …
I went to the Museum of Natural History yesterday, and was having a nice time taking some pictures in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life, when a security guard approached me. At first, I thought I was in trouble for taking pictures (even though flashbulbs were going off everywhere), but, no. Instead, he said to me, “I’ve been watching you. You take really good pictures.”
Watching me? Really? How could he possibly know the quality of my photos? Was he right over my shoulder? The pictures I took didn’t even come out that well (dim lighting, no flash):
“What do you like to take pictures of?”
“Well,” I said, “I like the spidery thing there.”
As I was on the lower level at this time across from the spider, he said, “You could take a picture from here!” I said, “No, that’s okay. I got what I need.” Slowly, I inched away from him …
“Do you want a picture taken with a polar bear?”
I didn’t even realize that I was standing near a diorama of some polar bears. I politely declined and kept moving. Away. Out of the room entirely. Across the hall and down a bit near a diorama of a millipede and some other spindly creature:
Safe!
He seemed a nice enough fellow, but it totally took me by surprise. I really shouldn’t have been that surprised, though, because the LAST time I was there taking pictures (in November, in the same hall), some other guy approached me and asked about the pictures I was taking. Like this one:
Again–low light, no flash. It’s obviously not my photography that attracts them.
Must be the sultry atmosphere …
